A man mauled by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Renfrewshire is undergoing plastic surgery to reconstruct his head and face.

It's understood the 27-year-old victim was attacked by two men before being savaged by the dog in Johnstone.

Detectives say the shocking incident took place in a lane connecting Macdowall Street and Church Street on Monday afternoon.

A police spokesman said: "This was a shocking incident which left the victim with serious injuries to his head and face.

"We are working to establish the circumstances of the assault at the moment and we are keen to speak to the two men involved.

"If anyone saw two men walking with a dog in the area of Macdowall Street and Church Street, or indeed the town centre in general, on Monday afternoon then we would urge you to get in touch.

"As the victim is still being looked after in hospital, we do not have complete descriptions of the men involved but we would ask anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to get in touch."

It is not yet known if the dog was deliberately set on the man.

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101.
