WALKERBURN Festival Lass Skye Houston revealed her granny wept with joy when it was announced that she is to lead the village’s festivities this summer.

The primary seven pupil proudly sported her Festival Lass 2014 black top this week when she told the Peeblesshire News she was surprised to be chosen.

The 11-year-old said: “I’m looking forward to all the events especially lighting the fire on Friday night, you have to be in P7 to be allowed to carry the torches.

“I’ve lived in Walkerburn all my life - they are lovely, friendly people here. Last year in the fancy dress parade I was a giraffe - the year has simply whizzed past. My mum has already got the house decorated and put all the bunting up.” Skye’s first official duty will be laying the wreath at the village memorial after the church service on Sunday, June 22.

Skye revealed she is looking forward to the Elibank bicycle ride which immediately follows events at the church. The cycle ride returns to the Harry Ballantyne Memorial Club where participants will enjoy a barbeque.

On Monday, June 23, there is a procession led by the Lass and a piper from Walkerburn School to the public hall for the initiation ceremony when Skye will receive her sash.

Walkerburn Festival Lass Skye Houston and Essay Winner Rosie Mitchell will lead this year’s local festivities.
