THE annual Act of Remembrance took place in Walkerburn last Sunday.

The parade, under the command of Colonel John Purves, marched from the Public Hall to the War Memorial where a large assembly of members of the community awaited their arrival.

Following the singing of “O God, our help in ages past”, a reading from Revelation and a prayer, the Names of the Fallen were read.

After the recital of “To the Fallen”, the playing of The Last Post led in to the observation of The Silence which ended with the sounding of Reveille.

A moving rendition of the Lament, “The Flowers of the Forest” preceded the laying of the wreaths.

The service ended with prayers and the singing of The National Anthem.

As the parade was dismissed, Colonel Purves invited those in attendance to return to the Public Hall to gather and enjoy luncheon provided by Brigadier Patricia Purves and helpers.

The Public Hall, festooned with flags and poppies, was the scene for a fitting memorial to honour those lost defending our country.

Posters from wartime Britain were displayed around the Hall. One headed, “Beware of Female Spies” with the byline, “Beware of Inquisitive Women” was the subject of considerable interest!

Also on display were many photographs of local service men and women from the war years to the present day; there was great poignancy and pride in spotting family and friends with many memories and stories being shared.
