Sir, Derek Lawson’s letter (Peeblesshire News, February 7) makes interesting but contradictory points about Trident and the referendum.
I was an active member of the Scottish Campaign Against Trident in the '70s opposing Harold Wilson’s decision to order it as a replacement WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) for the Polaris system.
Now Westminster wants to order another update that will cost £100 billion pounds over the next few years.
But, as you say, there are many reasons for voting in the referendum.
As a socialist I disagree with nearly everything the SNP stands for but think that more democracy is a good thing for us all.
However, I will argue against Carney and Salmond as true independence requires us to have control over our own currency like Norway and not a neo liberal economy of social spending cuts dictated y the Bank of England.
Norway is also not a member of the EU so retains the Krone and control over fishing, forestry and oil. Surely that reminds me of somewhere else!
Even though it is not a Nirvana, Norway, now arguably the world’s richest country per head of population, does indicate what is really possible if there is the political will.
I am, etc.
