SIR, I would like to thank over 100 people from Innerleithen who participated in a recent questionnaire and street survey or posted their answers in the box in the local post office.

We have analysed them and the results below will be submitted to the Smith commission for consideration when recommending more devolution in part exchange for voting No in last month’s referendum.

Below are the questions and the answers as a percentage that will be provided as an indication of our feelings here. This survey was carried out by local people of different parties and none.

Especially interesting has been the participation of people who voted No originally in expectation of something better based on the last minute pledges made by politicians and in the papers.

Question 1: Do you believe that, before the Referendum decision, a clear commitment was made to devolve 'extensive new powers’ to the Scottish Parliament in the event of a 'No’ vote? Yes 71%, No 25%, Don’t Know 4%.

Question 2: What powers would you like to see being devolved to the Scottish Government? Air passenger duty 77%, Alcohol and tobacco duties 83%, Broadcasting and media 80%, Corporation Tax 80%, Control of the Crown Estates 82%, Employment and equality law 86%, Immigration 81%, Income Tax 79%, National Insurance 81%, North Sea oil and gas revenue 88%, Pensions 76%, and Welfare 84%.

Question 3: Do you believe that 'the vow’ made by the UK parties to devolve new powers to the Scottish Government will be honoured? Yes 27%, No 69%, Don’t Know 4%.

This survey has been conducted in other towns and villages across the borders and a combined submission will also be made noting the concerns and details for more powers that are appropriate locally and nationally.

I am, etc.
