SIR, Andrew Farquhar’s attempt to get the council to rethink their policy on garden waste collection is admirable but I suspect will come to nothing – much like my attempts to deposit my garden waste at Eshiels Recycling Centre.

Having a large garden, I was of course dismayed when the council put an end to garden waste collection. I had to accept that I’d be making regular visits to Eshiels, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the new 'improved’ garden waste receptacle - a walled area where the refuse had to be heaved to the top of the chest-high wall and chucked over.

Not exactly easy for a female OAP and I wondered why some sort of ramp couldn’t be added so that the 'refuse tipper’ would at least be at a more convenient height to avoid the strain of hoisting the refuse up and over the wall. Shortly after that visit I was astonished to discover further height had been added to the wall! As it’s not possible for me to lift heavy bags and containers up and over this higher wall I am now disposing of my garden waste in my grey household waste bin.

It very much goes against the grain to do this as I’ve always been a bit of an eco-warrior, wasting nothing and recycling everything. I’m sure I’m not alone in this predicament and can only marvel at the farce which is Eshiels’ improved recycling system.

I am, etc.
