Sir, Further to letters in recent editions of your paper about cycling on pavements, can I point out that Innerleithen is not alone.

It is most heartening to see the increase in cycling, and mountain-biking in particular, with the benefits to young and old and to the community as a whole. However, as a Peebles older person it is disappointing to note that some cyclists appear to consider that pavements, other footpaths and the footbridge as extensions of cycle paths.

There is a rise in the dangerous, and illegal practice of cycling on pavements, and in particular the busy High Street. Improvements to Priorsford Bridge have effectively narrowed it but still some cyclists try to cycle across when pedestrians, disabled people in electric buggies, and mothers with pushchairs are also trying to cross.

In the interest of these other bridge users the Council sensibly put up 'Cyclists Dismount’ signs - these were in the Tweed on Monday morning - a sad reflection on some of the cycling community.
