TWO of Scotland's leading young golfers have been given Honorary Lifetime Memberships by Peebles Golf Club.

Reigning Scottish Boys Champion Craig Howie and former Scottish Girls Champion Ailsa Bain were presented with their awards in front of a packed clubhouse at October 26's Presentation Night, by club captain George Cuthill.

Howie, who last month started a golf scholarship at the University of Stirling, became the first Borderer to win the Scottish Boys Championship when he defeated St Andrews' Ewan Scott at Murcar Links in April, while Ailsa, currently training to become a fully qualified PGA professional at Cardrona, won her national title at Lanark three years ago.

Club captain Cuthill said: "We are delighted and very proud to give Ailsa and Craig the honour of Lifetime Membership, to reflect their wonderful achievements in the game. They are two very fine ambassadors for our club and the town of Peebles.

"I'm sure they will both go far in the game, travelling and competing at a higher level, but we know they will always be Peebles Golf Club members. It's not often a small town like Peebles can boast one national champion, so to have two in the space of three years is a wonderful achievement.

"Their success is testament to the hard work put in by some of the volunteers at the club over the last few years and the support they have had from their families. They have both helped raise the profile of the club, gaining national coverage for their wins, and hopefully they can inspire more youngsters in Peebles to take up golf and become our future members," added Cuthill.

Ailsa and Craig also receive the honour of joining Peebles other national champions and international caps Allan Turnbull, Sharon Gallagher and Paul Gallagher on the club's "Wall of Fame" in the clubhouse, while collecting souvenir photographic mementos.

The event also saw the rest of the season's winners from Peebles Golf Club's Men's section, with Club Champion Kris Hopkirk collecting the most coveted prize of the year, while Harry Peat won the notable double of the 'B' Championship and Peebles Open.

Jamie Morris became the first winner of the Free Club Membership draw, with James Blacklaw the lucky winner of a set of clubs, donated by Morven Howie.

The Club would like to thank all its tournament sponsors from the 2012 season for their continued funding and all members who have supported events throughout the year.
