WALKERBURN Bowling Club, established in 1889, must now be the smallest bowling club in the Peeblesshire area with only 23 adult members.

The club is very proactive in gaining publicity to promote bowls and is showing some signs of success by having a junior section of ten members.

A triple of Juniors from the club representing Peeblesshire qualified to take part in the Scottish Young Bowlers Championships in Ayr where they won three of their five games.

We had a very successful day at our stand at the Peebles Show where many people came and had some shots at the target bowling. The club are looking forward to getting a lot of renovation work completed during the closed season and this will be of benefit to our existing members and new members.

Club sessions (Wapenshaws) are on a Monday afternoon at 2pm and again on a Friday evening at 7pm with an earlier start at 6.30pm during August .

We would like to promote the fact that Lawn Bowling is suitable for all ages and abilities with the club being able to fit in sessions by appointment.

Our day at the show was followed on the Sunday when we held our Plora Pairs Open Tournament which was won by Caron Ironside and Danni Salton when they overcame the father and son pair of Jock and Ian Anderson. Thanks go to Anne Stevenson for her sponsorship and to everybody for entering and helping to make the day a success.

Our next Open Tournament on Saturday, August 29 is the HBMI Triples with the first prize being £150.

Our last tournament of the season will be an Open Pairs tournament on Saturday, September 12 and the highest placed pair containing a junior (under 17 on April 1, 2015) will receive a prize of £40. Entries for both tournaments to John Smith on 01896 870585 at your earliest.

Our bowling season finishes on Saturday, September 26.

In an effort to extend our season and bring people together we are looking forward to the construction of our three rink Pétanque Piste which will bring a larger footfall into the club. Pétanque can be played almost throughout the year as long as you wear something warm.
