PEEBLES cyclist Grant Ferguson has moved a step nearer realising his Olympic dream after securing his first World Cup.

Ferguson, 21, emerged victorious in the UCI Mountain Bike Cross-country World Cup in Italy last Sunday after a thrilling tussle.

The lead change hands several times over the six laps at Val Di Sole before the Borders cyclist took control to defeat French rival Titouan Carod by 26 seconds.

After going so close on many occasions Ferguson was delighted to at last be able to climb to the top of the podium.

The cyclist’s dad Sandy said: “He’s deserved it after all his hard work and it’s great that at lost he’s got to the top of that podium.

“This victory will certainly help Grant’s quest to go to Brazil next year - it’s a complicated system but the points he has earned for his country will be a big help.” Ferguson’s next big event comes in Andorra next weekend when he represents British cycling in the World Championships.
