Peebles 30

Musselburgh 17

Allan Beveridge at The Gytes

THERE are two games to play and Peebles are still in with a good fighting chance of staying up.

Last week's encounter with the lads from the Honest Toon was a must win game for the Gytes men.

Win they did and with a bonus try point, which for the time being put Peebles third from the bottom above Kelso and Aberdeen, but still a way to go.

Peebles started this game well but initially only good tackling by the Anderson brothers, David and Callum, stopped Peebles from going behind in the first couple of minutes.

Immediately after that scare Peebles were on the front foot - Willie Brown took a good lineout on his own and the backs put the ball through the hand and took play to the visitors half of the field.

From a ruck a storming McConnell drive - the first of many - the visitors were penalised. Greg Raeburn took a kick at goal but the effort was wide.

Peebles did go ahead in the eighth minute when Raeburn landed a three pointer.

It was 16 minutes into the game when Peebles were lucky not to have Ryan McConnell yellow carded for tackling without using his arms.

Musselburgh kicked to the corner.

They won the lineout and after several drives at the line the ball was fed out to Owenson who side stepped the defence and scored the opening try. The same player added the conversion.

Peebles were awarded another penalty and they too kicked to the corner, only to again loose the lineout which was really uncharacteristic. Unfortunately, right after this, Murdo Anderson dislocated his shoulder and had to leave the field and head to BGH. Liam Daly came on in the back row.

It was right on half time when Peebles eventually got their noses in front.

After several drives at the visitors' line Donald Anderson broke right and was stopped short. James Cockburn was first on the scene for Peebles - he ripped the ball from his skipper and drove over. The conversion was missed leaving the score 8-7.

Musselburgh regained the lead with a penalty by Owenson.

But for the remainder of this game it was all Peebles.

Raeburn kicked another penalty for Peebles to go a point in front.

Ross Brown scored a try under the posts which Raeburn converted to stretch the advantage to18-10.

Steven Hamilton then broke up the right wing, drew the visitors' full back, and gave a perfect pass to Conor Blyth who scored in the corner.

Raeburn added the conversion to give Peebles an important 15 point lead.

It was that man Raeburn who got the touch down for the bonus point after really good handling by Blyth, McConnell and Cammy Pye.

Raeburn also added the conversion.

Musselburgh did score a consolation try in injury time to make the final score 30-17.

This week it does not get any easier as Peebles have got to make the long trip to Largs to play second top Marr.

Peebles were the winners when the teams met earlier in the season but this will be tough.

The game at Largs is a 2pm kick off for anyone travelling to the game.

All support would be very welcome.
