CHAMPIONSHIP Week at Peebles Golf Club produced a few epic encounters.

Steven Waldie would have been forgiven for reminiscing about the B Division Championship he lifted 21 years ago.

But he managed to hold off the strong challenge from Kevin Wood to lift his first ever Men’s Club Championship after an exciting 36-hole final on Saturday.

Despite a nervy start to the opening round, played in unseasonal wind and rain, it was Wood who took the upper hand after the first 18 holes, emerging at lunch with a one-hole advantage. Birdies at the 11th and 13th were followed by a concession at the 14th hole to see him go three up, but Waldie fought back strongly in the closing holes to narrow the gap.

The evening round followed a similar pattern, but it was Steven who took control midway through the final nine, winning the match in style with a superb 20-foot putt for par on the 33rd hole to see a new name on the champions’ board.

Wood had taken care of Andrew Waddell – the man who ousted defending champion Jamie Morris the previous night – with a thumping 6&5 semi-final win, a score line matched by Waldie who took the scalp of Ally Meikle by the same margin.

The B Championship final was also a close affair, with David Bone victorious after a narrow 2 and 1 win over Callum Borthwick.

Meanwhile in the C Championship, Les Shortreed needed only 14 holes to win a one-sided final over Chris Byers.

The unstoppable Sheila Cuthbertson made it 19 Ladies Championship wins with an emphatic victory over Patricia Wood in the final, stretching her remarkable record to wins across six different decades.

Cuthbertson had defeated June-Anne Clark in the Thursday semi-final, while Wood overcame Denise Richards.

There was an astonishing comeback in the Ladies B Final, with Mandi Bain turning a four-hole deficit at the turn to bounce back in style to beat Iris French by a margin of 2 and 1.

David Lindsay won the Junior Championship Final with a comfortable 6 and 5 victory over Dillon Rice, while Fearghas Lowther clinched the Peebles Junior Open after an excellent nett 63 (13) on Tuesday, with Rice the runner-up after his fine nett 65.
