INNERLEITHEN mechanic Dean Whiteford was the toast of St Ronan's Border Games on Saturday after breaking the tape in the mile handicap.

The middle-distance specialist led for most of the way to win from Kelso's Colin Welsh and Greg Walker of Hawick.

After lifting the trophy Dean told us: "I could hear the crowd cheering all the way round and that helped me get over the line."

Hawick's Cory Wilson won the lucrative 100 metres sprint.

The 20-year-old edged out fellow Teri Glyn Desport in the final.

The half mile also went to Hawick with Rory Anderson racing through the field for glory.

Edinburgh veteran Andy Cullen turned back the clock to land the 200 metres.

John Motion's Leithenburn club enjoyed success in the youths races with 15-year-old Sam Archibald claiming first in the 90 metres.

Luke Rathie was victorious in the confined 200 metres for the New Zealand Trophy.

And fellow Leithenburn runner Aaron Glendinning claimed the 800 metres America Cup.

Coach Motion said: "The runners excelled themselves in front of their home crowd. "

Nine-year-old Aaron also won the Best Performance of the Day award.

The youths mile was won by Olivia Rodden of Jed AC.

The youths 200 metres was won by Fraser Rout from Hawick.
