FORMER Duns swimmer Dan Wallace took the first Olympic medal for the Borders yesterday in the men's relay.

He along with his team of Stephen Milne, Duncan Scott and James Guy took silver, finishing behind a dominant USA team.

Speaking about the success, Stewart Harris, Chief Executive of sportscotland said: "I’m absolutely delighted that the strong Scottish contingent in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay made such a decisive contribution in Team GB winning the silver medal, and I congratulate Stephen Milne, Robbie Renwick, Dan Wallace, and Duncan Scott as well as their English colleague James Guy on producing such world-class performances in the heat and then the final.

"It was an incredible race won by Team USA and it’s a great honour for Stephen, Robbie, Dan, and Duncan to be the first Scots to win medals at the Rio Olympics," he added.

"Eight of the nine Scottish swimmers in Rio are based in Scotland, which demonstrates how strong our performance programme is thanks to the collaboration between Scottish Swimming, the coaches, clubs, and experts at the sportscotland institute of sport."
