IT was a glorious day on Saturday when the first of the West Linton Bowling Club finals took place.

The Gents Championship was between Tom Robertson and Dougie Taylor and what a match it was.

A hard fought game that produced some excellent bowling. There was a mighty tussle going on when they peeled at 13.

The game continued with one shot here and one shot there until the penultimate end which gave Dougie the lead at 20 shots to Tom’s 18.

And Dougie held his nerve to get that last winning point to take him to 21.

The Ladies Championship finalists were Liz Jent and May Sinclair.

It was a close game at the beginning when they peeled a couple of times. But Liz bowled well and May had a couple of unlucky shots and the end result of 21 shots to Liz and 9 to May did not really reflect the good game it was.

Other matches were the Gents B section between Peter Martin and young bowler, Alec Robertson.

Some very good heads were achieved and it was a close match but the more experienced Peter won through with 21 shots to Alec’s 17.

Andrew Downie and Scott Swan played for the Caird Cup and there was some very good bowling from these new players. Scott jumped ahead to 15 – 9 but Andrew pulled back but Scott fought on and won through with 21 shots to 18.

On Sunday the new Ladies club champion, Liz Jent was playing against Pat McKenzie for the Bob Moffat Salver.

Liz was on good form and took an early lead with 11 shots to 2.

But Pat managed a four and continued to fight back to 11 – 9. Liz went ahead again at 20 – 11.

Pat came back again but Liz stayed cool and won the match 21 shots to Pat’s 18.

The Edward Cup was played for by Marie Gray and May Sinclair. The ladies were having a good tussle both moving the jack here and there. But May managed a four at the last end and won the match with 21 points to 11.

The Gents A finalists were the same two finalists from the Gents Championship, Tom Robertson and Dougie Taylor. And like the previous day there was some excellent bowling from both players.

But Tom reversed the tide and won this match with 21 shots to Dougie’s 18.

The Juniors Championship finalists were Callum Bruce and Alec Robertson. Alec was playing fine but Callum was just that bit better at 16-10.

But Alec kept his head and fought back winning the match with 21 shots to Callum’s 19.

President, Charlie Smith, thanked everyone who came to support the players and make it a successful and enjoyable two days of play in very nice weather.

He also thanked the catering team for an excellent spread and Willie Bruce for organising the games.
