PEEBLES Netball has been a hotbed for national squad shooters over recent years, with Jo Pettitt shooting for the national team, the Scottish Thistles, at the Commonwealth Games, and Jenny Hudson gaining international honours for shooting in national age group squads.

A rising star hoping to follow in their footsteps is 13-year-old Peebles High School pupil Abbie Sorrell.

Abbie plays goal attack and shooter for Peebles Netball Under 15s and was also selected this year for the Borders District U15 netball squad.

Talent identified by a national selector at a recent District match she subsequently attended trials for the East of Scotland Netball Academy and was delighted to be selected for the final squad.

Following an initial residential weekend Abbie will train with the East squad regularly over the season, along with other elite performers from the east of Scotland, all hoping to make that step up to national level.

Peebles Netball coach Linda Nicholson is delighted with Abbie’s selection. She told us: “Abbie is a very talented young shooter and also very dedicated to her sport.

"We are very pleased that yet another shooter from the club has been identified as having the potential to progress."
