PEEBLES athletes Susan Ridley has returned from Australia with gold.

The veteran runner was competing at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth.

Susan’s first event was the 8km cross-country, which consisted of four laps of flat parkland, in searing temperatures of over 30 degrees centigrade.

The highly competitive field of 49 in the W50 age group consisted of many previous World and European Masters Champions, which led to an exciting race.

Great Britain's Lucy Elliott just edged out Sally Gibbs of New Zealand by 0.2 seconds.

Susan ran a strong race steadily working her way through the field to finish sixth.

With teammate Jackie Newton coming home in seventh, GB were convincing gold medal winners and World Champions in the team event ahead of Australia and USA.

Two days later, Susan was back competing on the track in the 5000m.

Again in searing temperatures, Susan ran well to finish seventh out of another high quality field of 34.
