BUCKING the national trend, the girls outnumbered the boys at Sunday’s ClubGolf Junior Coaching Taster Day as more than 30 youngsters from primary schools across Peebles enjoyed their first introduction to golf.

Despite heavy rain in the morning, the sun broke out just in time for the kids’ midday start as Peebles' team of volunteer coaches welcomed the new recruits, building on the club’s reputation as one of the country’s leading facilities for junior golf development.

With more than 80 per cent of Scotland’s golf club members being male, Peebles is once again challenging the golfing statistics as the girls showed the boys that it’s a game for both halves.

The one-hour session was a precursor to a 14-week season long coaching programme, which comes as part of the club’s Under-12s junior membership, costing just £40 per annum.

The first full coaching session takes place on Sunday, April 2, with P1 – P3 starting at 12pm and the P4 – P7 age group at 1.15pm.

Those graduating from last year’s ClubGolf coaching will take part in the innovative 18 Steps programme, involving on course coaching from the club pro, Steve Johnston.
