It was a very pleasant day on Saturday when the first of the bowling club finals took place.

The Gents Championship was between Adrian Cottam and Mike Devenney and what a good match it was.

Mike made a good start, followed by some good bowling from Adrian. Then there were four well drawn bowls by Mike to take the lead 12-9. Another three good bowls takes him to 15-9.

At the next end, Adrian got two shots to bring the score to 15-11. At 16-13 Adrian was lying shot but Mike’s last bowl picked up the jack and moved it to his own bowls giving him four shots. At 20-13 Adrian did the exact same thing and moved the jack from Mike’s bowl and gave himself 4 shots bringing the score to 20-17.

At the last end Mike was lying but Adrian again picked up the jack but Mike bowled the winning point he needed with his second last bowl to reach 21-17. Mike was, once again, the Gents champion.

The Ladies Championship finalists were Cathie Bruce and May Sinclair. Cathie took the first two ends but May managed to promote her bowl to take a point on the third.

At the early part of the match the ladies peeled at 5-5 then May won a point to take it to 6-5. Thereafter, Cathie produced some very fine bowling throughout the game.

May had a couple of unlucky shots but Cathie was the more consistent finding the right lengths at the right time. Cathie’s very good bowling resulted in a final score of 21 shots to her and 9 to May. Cathie, like Mike, was once again club champion.

The Caird Cup was played between Andrew Downie and, new bowler, Ian Hamilton playing in his first final.

Andrew made a good start to take an 8-0 lead but Ian fought back and won three shots in a row. There was some good, steady bowling by Andrew to take the score to 20-3. Ian managed another 3 shots but a good last bowl from Andrew made it 21-6.

President, Tom Robertson, thanked everyone for coming and making it a good day. Three good matches were played in fine weather. He then made the presentations and thanked the ladies for providing afternoon tea.
