ON Sunday West Linton golf professional Ian Wright finished teaching and delivering another set of Young Masters Golf (YMG) lessons.

In total there were 35 pupils being coached at the various levels that the YMG programme offers.

All pupils successfully completed their respective sections with a number receiving passes with distinction.

All received their certificates at the clubhouse and a number then stayed to compete in a chipping, putting and driving competition, kindly organised by the club’s junior convenor, Colin Robertson.

Ian, has taught a number of successful golfers whose first involvement with the game was through the YMG, was once again delighted with the uptake for the programme.

He told us: “I like the YMG package because not only does it teach the players how to hit a golf ball there are also important sections in it relating to rules and etiquette.

"To me it is a complete package and ensures that young players coming into the golf club environment have an understanding on how they should conduct themselves.

"The club fully supports me in the delivery of YMG and have recently amended the junior (Blue Tees) course to make it even more user friendly for players who are just beginning to play.

"I think that is an important decision by the club and we should hopefully see the benefits of it with a number of golfers graduating to play for the junior team.”

Ian’s son and West Linton’s club professional, Gareth Wright, was in the news last week when he won the Palmer & Harvey (P&H) sponsored Scottish PGA 54-Hole Order of Merit Event held at The Renaissance Club in East Lothian.

This was his second success in recent weeks following on from his victory at the 18-hole Rank Recycling Scotland (RRS) Sponsored ProAm Competition at Downfield Golf Club, Dundee.

Gareth remains second in The Order of Merit Series behind Paul O’Hara, who, on his way to winning the St Andrews Brewing Company Sponsored 36-hole Order of Merit Event held at West Linton Golf Club in August, shot a new course record of 62.

Recent winners of Competitions held at West Linton are Fiona Benzies, who won the Thorburn Medal, defeating Gwen Morton Lloyd on countback and Peter Featherstone lifted the Fergusson Medal recording the days lowest scratch score in the process.

Jack Kinghorn continued his recent good form with victory in the Alan Donaldson Stableford Competition for juniors whilst Finn Begbie was victorious for the third time this Season in taking the Blue Tee version of the same event.

Congratulations to all players participating in the competitions and continuing to make use of the Championship Golf Course that is West Linton.
