A BUMPER field of 252 runners turned out for the second round of this season's Winter Cross Country Series despite freezing temperatures, torrential rain and howling winds.
But the Borders had to settle for second best in the main men's race with Edinburgh claiming the first four places.
David Simpson, making his debut on the series, claimed first in a time of 26.12 minutes - around 30 metres ahead of Corstorphine's Keith Hood, who won the opening round at Norham. Chris O'Brien from Corstorphine finished 30 seconds later for third.
Berwick's Adam Fletcher finished just ahead of Kelso's Keith Lyall in 27.42 minutes at the head of the Borders finishers.
Although the best Moorfoot runners finished just outside the top 10, with Darin Dougal, Michael McGovern and Tom Hobbs finishing within seconds of each other to finish 11th, 12th and 13th they managed to squeeze out the Corstorphine team by a single point.
The Moorfoots faired even better in the open ladies race with 16-year-old Scout Adkin from Peebles winning in a time of 31.10, more than 30 metres ahead of team-mate Carol Moss.
Scout told the Peeblesshire News: "It was really tough out there as it took so much effort just to stay on your feet. It was muddy going up and really slippy coming down. I'm getting used to running with the adults now and I enjoyed winning."
Other Moorfoot positions were Will Hynd 19th, Steve Martin 26th, Colin Williams 30th, Aegir mcIver 51st, Clive Adkin 56th, Russell Anderson 62nd, Alex Campbell 68th, Walter Barrie 89th, Dave Wardman 144th and Mike Pearson 175th.
A total of 177 runners completed the 4.5 miles course.
And in the junior 2 mile race a total of 75 athletes reached the finishing line with Edinburgh's Ruaridh Miller reversing the places from the first round to beat Jed's Stuart Somervail in a time of 11.20.
Adam Craig from Lauderdale Limpers produced a great finish to claim third ahead of Rowan Marr of Gala Harriers.
Marr's team-mate, Paul Henney, claimed eighth in an impressive time of 12.05 seconds.
Louise Mercer from Teviotdale Harriers was the first girl home in 12.20, just ahead of Gala Harrier Lucy Henderson-Morris in a fine 12.46 and Moorfoot runner Sophie Collins - who won her age group - in a time of 12.59.
Jacob Adkin was an impressive 12th overall for the Moorfoots, Kobe Stevens 15th, Ruaridh Britton 25th, David Collins 26th, Lewis Gray 34th, Mitchell Winyard 41st and Kayze Stevens 56th.
Moorfoots training this Sunday is at Peebles from the Gytes at 10.00 a.m of which non members are welcome.
