Faye has to shoulder the glory
PEEBLES golden girl Faye Nicholson had an international debut to remember.
The 18-year-old, who was competing for Scotland Under 20s, not only won her Celtic Cup long jump in Cardiff but dislocated her shoulder with her third leap.
And it looks as though the student will be sidelined from the sandpit for up to a month.
Mum and coach, Linda, told us: "Faye had taken her first two jumps before disaster stuck, and had already recorded an easy five metres 70, to win the international. The distance was only one centimetre off her indoor lifetime best and 12 centimetres off the meeting record.
"On her third attempt she tried to put into practice a new arm position in landing, but didn't quite pull it off, jarring her arm and seeing her shoulder pop out of place.
"The rest is a bit of a blur as the pain was excruciating, but medics arrived at the pit and she was taken to the VIP lounge for doctor attention to put her shoulder back into place."
Despite missing her Under 20s medal ceremony because of the treatment, Faye did get to meet legendary long jumper Lynn Davies - winner of the 1964 Olympics - while she was with the doctor.
And organisers decided to give the teenager her very own time on the rostrum, with her arm in sling, to collect her gold medal. Second place in the competition went to England's Micaela Brindal with 5.61 metres.
Faye's jump takes her to the top of her age-group in the UK rankings for 2012.
