PEEBLES High School retained their title at the Borders Schools Athletics held at Earlston High School.

The firm grass track allowed for some fast times and there were 11 new track and field records broken.

Freddie Rooke (Berwickshire HS) proved to be a real talent smashing the S2 boys 100m record in 11.81 and also clocking a time of 24.42 in the 200m to take that record. He claimed his third record with a leap of 5.39 to take the S2 long jump record.

Philipa Robertson, of Hawick HS, took the S1 300m record in 44.94s and Galashiels Academy athlete Matt Dougal set a new record in the S1 800ms in 2m 21.15s Peebles HS S1 girls set the final track record with a time of 55.5 in the relay.

In the field, Gary Robertson, of Galashiels Academy, threw 13.4m in the Seniors to set a record. Kelso HS's Leona Porteous threw 21.08 in the S2 discus. Isaac Bacon of the Academy cleared 1.50m in the S1 high jump to set a record. Another pupil to set more than one record was Peebles HS's Jordan Charters.

He jumped 6.21m in the senior long jump and cleared 1.86m in the high jump.

The athletes from all schools all competed in a very sporting manner and pushed themselves to their physical limits on a very hot day.

Peebles HS claimed the relay quaich in a competition that went down to the last race & indeed the last changeover in the Senior Boys race.

Peebles finished on 55 points and Galashiels Academy second on 52.

In the overall Championship Peebles HS retained their title with a total of 546 points and Galashiels Academy pushed them all the way with a score of 497 points. The Berwickshire HS claimed third with 476 points.

The other results were as follows: Hawick HS had 441; Kelso HS 438; Earlston HS 413; Jedburgh GS 320; Selkirk HS 304.
