WHEELCHAIR athlete Samatha Kinghorn warmed up for next year's Commonwealth Games by claiming four Scottish titles last weekend.

The 17-year-old from Gordon won the T53 class crowns for 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres at the blustery Scotstoun track in Glasgow.

Although Berwickshire's Guy Learmonth only managed the one title - it was rich reward for the 21-year-old. Learmonth's dip in form at the start of the season cost him a place at the European Under 23 Championships.

But steady progress through the 800 metres heats and semi-finals saw him start Sunday's final as favourite.

And in a tactical final he managed to outsprint Edinburgh's Jake Wightman and Myles Edwards to break the tape in a time of 1.55.45.

Learmonth told us: "It was good to get back to winning ways. The wind meant there was no chance of a good time but I'm happy with the title." There was also gold for Sarah McCormack from Peebles who destroyed the field in the final of the 500-metres.

The 26-year-old Moorfoot Runner beat runner-up Kara Tait, by almost a lap to cross the line in 16.16.44 - five seconds faster than last year's winning time.

Moorfoot coach Gregor Nicholson said: "In the circumstances, that was a good indicator that Sarah is back running well.

"It was disappointing not to get a race but her winning time and the consistency of her lap splits in the stiff breeze meant it was still a valuable outing.

"There is a decent crop of female distance runners in Scotland at the moment, with a good few contenders for the Glasgow 2014 qualifying time for the 5000m who we'd hoped would provide a stern test for Sarah but, puzzlingly, none of them had even entered the National Championships." Sarah's next competitive outing will be the World Mountain Running Championships in Poland next month for her native Ireland.

Coach Nicholson added: "We've been getting some input from Chris Jones, Ireland National Endurance coach and personal of coach of European cross-country champion Fionnuala Britton, which has been very helpful and a bit different for Sarah, and he was pleased with that performance." Chirnside's Pat Swan showed a return to form to claim bronze in the final of the 400 metres.

The former GB Under 23 athlete finished five metres down on winner Kris Robertson with a time of 48.44. But there was disappointment for long jumper Faye Nicholson from Peebles who finished fourth.

The 19-year-old reached 5.79 - around 60 centimetres behind winner Sarah Warnock from Edinburgh.

It was a similar story for West Linton's Stacey Downie.

The 25-year-old teacher finished sixth in the finals of the 100 metres and 200 metres.

Amy Clancy from Peebles narrowly failed to qualify from her heat of the 100 metres.

And Dolphinton long-jumper Jordan Charters couldn't add to his indoor title by finishing down in tenth.
