The 23-year-old finished second in this month’s UK championships behind Sheffield’s Lee Emanuel.

But he still required the qualification standard time over the 1500 metres distance to guarantee his place on the plane for Sopot on March 7.

O’Hare opted to return to familiar territory - the Wanamaker Mile in New York - for a fast race and an attempt at reaching the standard.

The former University of Tulsa student ran well enough to not only finish fifth behind Will Leer in the world-class field, but also record a time of 3.54.66.

And his split time for 1500 was within the required time for the World Championships.

On Monday Chris was named along with Emanuel to run for Team GB at the championships.

Chris said: “I’m proud to be named in such a strong team going to Poland for the World Indoors.” Chris, who is the current British outdoor 1500 metre champion, will be joined by four other Scots - Laura Muir, Eilish McColgan, Eilidh Child and Jamie Bowie - in Team GB.

British Athletics Performance Director Neil Black said: “This is a relatively young team with a number of new faces taking individual places which is encouraging as we focus on long term development towards 2016 and 2017.” The heats of the 1500 metres take place at 1.25pm, UK time, on Friday, March 7.

And the final is the following day at 9pm.
