THE cream of Scotland’s young athletes were on their marks in Grangemouth over the weekend.

And four of the medal winners came from the Borders.

Peebles pupil Craig Mullins cemented his place at the top of the hammer pecking orders by retaining his senior title at the Scottish Schools Championships.

The 17-year-old won by a clear distance with a best throw of 51.74 metres.

But he found a few too good in his less-favoured shot putt - finishing down in fifth.

Berwickshire High’s Rosie Browne followed up her recent District Championship gold in the pole vault with victory in the Under 15s competition.

The former sprint star cleared 2.40 metres for the win.

Selkirk High’s Zaynah Aziz made an encouraging debut over the steeplechase fences.

The 15-year-old finished second in the 1500 metres steeplechase final with a new best time of 5.40.86 to claim the silver medal.

And there was a bronze medal for Peebles High pupil Niamh Shaw in the senior 1500 metres with a time of 5.05 minutes.

Earlston High’s Laura Munro was just shaded on the line for a medal in the final of the Under 15s 100 metres.

The 14-year-old recorded a new best of 13.08 to finish just six-hudredeths of a second away from third.

Jedburgh Grammar’s Jasmine Tomlinson also finished fourth in the final of the senior 100 metres with a time of 12.91 seconds.

Galashiels Academy’s Cameron Caldwell was also unfortunate in the final of the Under 17s 100 metres - recording a slower time than his semi-final to finish down in sixth. And there were a few other hard-luck stories with Earlston High’s Gavin Bryson just being run out of a medal in the senior 5000 metres, with Peebles High’s Ben Hindley two places further back in seventh.

Bryson also finished sixth in the final of the senior 1500 metres, once place behind Galashiels Academy’s Thomas Otton.

Kelso’s Angus Bryce ran well to reach the final of the Under 14s 200 metres final, where he finished fifth.

Bryce also finished seventh in the final of the 100 metres.

And Eve Huxley from Peebles High School was also impressive on her way to the final of the Under 15s 200 metres final, where she finished sixth.

Mullins, Browne, Aziz and Shaw will all represent Scotland next month at the UK Schools Championships.
