IT’S cup weekend in the Lowland League as teams look to take their place in the third round of the South of Scotland Challenge Cup.

And Vale of Leithen will be looking to build on their Borders derby win against Selkirk at the weekend.

Vale welcomed back six familiar faces to the starting XI on Saturday and they are set for a tough trip to Raydale Park to face fellow Lowland League side Gretna.

The Dumfries and Galloway side currently sit ninth in the league, just one point behind Chris Anderson’s men and will go into the match full of confidence after a good win.

On Saturday, they managed to thrash second place Dalbeattie Star 3-1, away from home and have a Scottish Cup tie with Buckie Thistle set up next week.

But, Vale outplayed their opponents in the last round of the South Cup when they beat South of Scotland league side Creetown 6-0, and will be looking for back-to-back wins as their next league game is against East Kilbride, for the third time this season.

Peebles Rovers are set for league action against Stirling Uni at Whitestone Park on Saturday.

Ger Rossi’s side will be looking to better their last result as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Coldstream.

Elsewhere in the Borders, Gala Fairydean Rovers have been drawn to play the Lowland League leaders East Kilbride at K Park in the South Cup.

Incidentally it was the South Lanarkshire side who knocked Vale out of the Scottish Cup a few weeks ago, but Steven Noble’s men will be looking to improve after a 4-1 Borders derby defeat at the hands of Hawick Royal Albert.

The Braw Lads advanced to the second round of the South Cup after a convincing 4-1 win over Heston Rovers in the last round and Noble will be hoping for a similar performance.
