Peebles Rovers 3

PEEBLES Rovers’ dreams of a top-six finish are on, after surviving an almighty scare in the second-half on Saturday.

But Ger Rossi’s side didn’t exactly have it all their own way in what was a thrilling and end-to-end encounter.

Still reeling from a 4-0 defeat to the Fifers back in April, Rovers had a score to settle, along with the added pressure of Tynecastle nipping at their heels in the table.

It looked a dream start for Peebles, Alan McMath popping up yet again to squeeze a Saul Schulz-Keith cross past the ‘keeper on 11 minutes.

Rovers couldn’t quite replicate their early successes, and the first-half spluttered along like a broken-down car.

Mikey McEwan had a good chance to extend Peebles’ lead, twisting and turning through a sea of legs to launch an effort which was saved.

The pressure was on for both teams, the literal definition of a six-pointer. Grappling like two tired fighters, the second-half whistle was a relief as both sides retreated to their corner.

Shippy came flying out swinging as play resumed, soon finding themselves level after 50 minutes.

John Martin stepped up to slot home a penalty, after Jordan Galloway was fouled in the box.

In the 55th minute John Martin then charged up the park on the counter to score, after Rovers missed a glorious opportunity.

Odds were soon evened after both sides were reduced to ten men – Robert Sterricks off for Rovers whilst Craig Anderson was dismissed for a last-man tackle.

In typical Alan McMath fashion, he scored the equaliser after storming up the park – leaving everyone for dead before powering home the ball to drag Rossi’s men back into it.

The clock was ticking and it looked as though the game was heading for a draw.

Cometh the hour, cometh David Lindsay.

With just moments left, the striker stepped up to fire home the winner – sending the Whitestone Park stand wild.

Smacking the ball with all his strength, the ball whizzed past Adamson in goal to secure all three points.
