HE was the first Scottish footballer to play professionally in Slovakia, but striker Gerry Rossi looks like he will have to retire from the game at the age of just 25.

Rossi, who has played in recent seasons with Gala Fairydean and Peebles Rovers, suffered ligament damage during a recent match against Duns.

It’s the latest blow in what many expected would be a glittering career within the beautiful game.

After coming through the ranks with Hibs he was released before breaking into the first team.

Not deterred, Gerry managed to earn a contract with Slovakian side FC Neded. After returning to Scotland he has played part-time with several local clubs, going on to captain the Fairydean for a season before a summer move to Whitestone Park.

But this latest knee ligament injury could be the end of the road.

Gerry, who watched his latest team crumble to a 5-1 defeat from the touchline at Easthouses on Saturday, told us: “I had a similar injury when I was playing full time and it took a lot of work to strengthen it enough to come back. I had the time then to commit myself to strengthening in the gym but I am only a part-time player now and have a job outside football.

“It is frustrating as I would like to be out there playing but I have to be realistic.

“It doesn’t look good and means I’ll certainly be out for the rest of the season – perhaps I won’t be able to come back but we’ll see. I’m listening to what the doctors say and we’ll play it by ear.” As well as turning out for his home team, Peebles Rovers, this season Rossi has also entered football coaching.

And whatever happens with his rehabilitation he believes his long-term future will be on the training pitch.

Rossi added: “I love coaching and get a lot out of it. If I can’t come back and play I will certainly keep coaching.”
