Having trained for over two years the squad finally got to play their first competitive matches earlier this month at Forrester High School in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Football Association created a new seven-aside Disability League this season with teams from across the country taking part.

The Borders boys only lost one of their four matches, drawing one and winning two.

And the weekend’s golden boot went to David Smith from Galashiels who hit the back of the net five times.

Alan Oliver, Borders Sport and Leisure Disability Development Officer, was delighted with the debut performance but is still on the lookout for even more talent.

He said: “The new Scottish FA Disability League is a fantastic initiative which enables all football teams across the country to compete in a national league. “It is great for the Scottish Borders to be represented in this league and it shows how popular football is down here.

“I would like to thank the Scottish Borders Disability Sports Group for supplying the team with strips and transportation assistance.

“We are always looking for new players to get involved and for further information please get in touch.” Training takes place at Netherdale in Galashiels every Thursday.

And the head coach had a special mention for his Peebles player.

Alan added: “Aaron travels down by bus every week for training and I don’t remember him ever missing a session.

“He’s got a great attitude and he can play a bit as well.” The new league was introduced by the SFA as part of its commitment to developing disability football.

All participating teams attended an initial classification Festival where players were rated in terms of technical ability so that players and teams could be effectively matched, creating a competitive environment for all involved.

All of the games are seven-aside and last for 15 minutes with up to four matches being played at each fixture.

There will be six fixtures throughout the season.

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Borders Sport and Leisure, is one of the Borders squad’s biggest fans. He told the Border Telegraph: “We are committed to the development of disability sport in our region for all ages.

“It is great to see the disability football squad get such a positive start to their season. Everyone at BSL will be rooting for them over the coming months.” The Borders Disability Squad is made up of Galashiels trio David Smith, Darren Thomson and Bryn Cross, Matthew Roebuck from Selkirk, Hawick pair Nathaniel Jones and Jordan Shepherd, as well as Peebles player Aaron.

The Borders team will play its next fixture on November 5.
