With the league in its infancy, all eight teams play each other on seven league nights before the end of the year, after which teams will be separated in first and second divisions to compete for division titles.

Peebles Netball Seniors opened the evening by maintaining their winning ways with a convincing victory over Team Tank, despite missing their wing attack Neve Mclean, who was attending a Scotland national squad training weekend.

Peebles U17s also racked up the goals against newly formed Jets, with the lack of sharp shooting from the Jets denying them a larger goal tally despite some strong individual performances particularly from Lynn Dalgleish in defence and Audrey Ewen in centre court.

The Dragons showed they meant business with a dominating performance over the Lauderdale Ladies, Dragons captain Caroline Connaghan securing 43 of their 52 goals, ably backed up by Shona Simpson with both displaying high accuracy on goal.

Gwen Bradley, BSLT leisure attendant and a familiar face at the Gytes, scooped fair play award for the Ladies, with Caroline also earning the title for the Dragons.

The gem of the evening was the scintillating final match between the youngest team in the league, the Border District U15 squad, and the Hotshots adult team.

With both teams currently borderline in terms of achieving top division status, they were desperate for points with a win possibly securing them the top division place in the new year.

The play, understandably frantic and tense at times, also brought out the very best in both teams. Hotshots defence duo Kylie Meredith and Evanna Holland left few chances for the U15 shooters to operate, severely restricting the lines in to goal for Rianna Sterricks (GS) and Eilidh Cannon (GA). At the other end of the court, Hotshots goal attack Jodie Troup was having the match of her career so far, producing the top shooting performance of the night with 87 per cent of her shots finding the net.

The score was close throughout, with the lead changing constantly. By half-time Hotshots looked like they may take the spoils, with a lead of nine goals to six building. But then the strength and fitness of the Border U15s across centre court started to show, Ailsa Innes (WD), Bryony Patterson (C) and Kazya Stevens (WA) in particular, all working relentlessly to move the ball skilfully and swiftly across court to outmanoeuvre their older opposition. The tactic worked, with the U15s creeping back into contention, and against the cheering of the partisan crowd of spectators, the youngsters sneaked a last minute victory over their older rivals.

Hotshots gained a valuable extra point for achieving a scoreline over half of the winning score, which leaves both teams with exactly the same points from their matches to date. Hotshots have a better goal difference, so maintain fourth in the rankings, to U15s 5th, but with Hotshots still to face some tough matches, it is still too early to call the final placings.

This weekend’s Border netball action takes place at Berwickshire High School on Sunday with the second play day of the Junior Aitken Turnbull Border League taking place.
