WHEN the chips are down Peebles know how to pick themselves up.

And following Saturday’s defeat to Hawick, they made amends against last season’s Premier League champions, Lothian Thistle, in a thrilling League Cup tie at Whitestone Park.

It was the visitors who started brightest when a good ball through found Ousman See one-on-one with Rovers keeper Darren Walker.

But the Peebles number one produced a fine save with his feet.

Just after 20 minutes a Johnny Flockhart cross was cleared off the line by the Lothian defender.

And five minutes later the home side went in front after Chris Taylor received the ball on the right, managed to cut inside and shoot from the edge of the area.

On the half hour the visitors drew level.

A through ball found See who squared for Liam O’Donnell to slot home a shot.

The last chance of the half came from the home side when a Daniel Mcaleavy corner was met by the head of Dale Richardson, who narrowly put the ball wide.

Into the second half and it was John O’Hara’s team that started the sharpest with substitute Lee Zavaroni forcing a good save from Swain.

Jon Ross Kerr picked up the ball five minutes later and released a shot which went past Swain to put the Rovers 2-1 up.

But with 25 minutes to go Liam O’Donnell was tripped in the box by Jason Darling and with no hesitation the referee pointed to the spot.

Darren Smith sent Walker the wrong way to bring Lothian level.

Five minutes later a mistake from Shaun Meikle allowed Lothian substitute Ryan Hutchison to beat Richardson to the ball, he then rounded Walker to cut back for Smith to grab his second of the game.

On 82 minutes Walker was forced into a save from Liam O’Donnell.

And straight down the other end Lee Zavaroni delivered a cross which was met by Paul Murray to head into the bottom corner of the net to bring the Rovers level.

So the Rovers manage a 3-3 draw against a difficult Lothian side and still have the chance of qualifying from the group after Craigroyston defeated Hawick - for the Rovers to qualify they need to beat Craigroyston on Saturday and hope Lothian beat Hawick.
