Leithen Rovers 5 v 1 Newton (A.E.T)
ROVERS' season did have a silver lining after all. The Innerleithen team lost several key players after their historic treble
last season.
And manager Alan Notman also quit the club earlier this season.
But on Sunday Leithen Rovers were finally given something to smile about
at the final of the Waddell Cup.
A Callum McIntyre goal on 39 minutes should have put them on their way
to victory against a plucky Newtown team.
But following the break it was one-way traffic against Rovers. Newtown deservedly equalised on the hour with Scott Leitch heading home
Matty Scott's corner.
The inspirational Steven Makepeace was at the centre of most of Newtown's
attacks and only a few fluffed chances and some good saves from Ross Davidson prevented the villagers taking the lead.
Newtown's vocal supporters thought they had won the cup with only five
minutes remaining.
Roland Gibb handled the ball inside his own area and Neil McIvar was given
the task of converting the penalty.
A nervous shot whistled past the post - much to th erelief of keeper Davidson.
The introduction of old heads Craig Lowrie and Alan Kerr settled down Rovers.
And they began to dominate in extra time.Lowrie scored seven minutes into the added time.
And the player boss set up Gary Hastie for the third just a few minutes
later.
Tosh Fleming squared for Hastie to knock home a fourth in the 103rd minute.
And just to finish off a great afternoon for Leithen Rovers substitute Alan McMath scored the goal of the game just before the final whistle.
