Civil Service Strollers 5 v 0 Peebles FC
DESPITE their best efforts, Peebles crashed out of the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup when they went down to Civil Service Strollers in this second round tie at Muirhouse last Saturday.
Despite what the final score-line might suggest, Peebles still played well over the piece as they were the better side after the break until the Strollers scored three late goals to give a false impression of the game.
However, it was the Strollers who made a dream start as they opened the scoring after three minutes when from a Russell Hogarth left-wing cross, Ross Millar gave Peebles 'keeper Mark Wilson no chance with a powerful downwards header from six yards.
Then the Strollers added a second goal just four minutes later when from a Hogarth right-wing cross, Ross Millar beat Wilson all ends up with a glancing header from six yards.
Peebles replied with Fraser Henderson coming close to reducing the leeway with a good effort from 20 yards, while home 'keeper Allan Dillion twice foiled David Knox with fine save.
However, Peebles came much more into the game after the break as a Nicky Cairns through-ball sent Andrew Hamilton racing into the Strollers box before he was thwarted by a brilliant save from Dillion at close range.
Then shortly afterwards, Dillion could only fumble a 20 yards free-kick attempt from Darren Crosby, but there were no Peebles players around to take advantage before the Strollers 'keeper safely gathered in the loose ball at the second attempt.
But just when it seemed that Peebles still had a chance of saving this game, it was the Civil Service who scored a third goal after 76 minutes.
After the Peebles defence had failed to clear a Craig Dickson left-wing cross, it was Strollers substitute Chris Bain who headed the loose bouncing ball home from close range.
Then the Strollers grabbed a fourth goal just three minutes later when after a scramble in the Peebles goal-mouth, Chris Bain slammed the loose ball home from 12 yards.
The Strollers continued on the attack as David Turnbull seemed almost certain to score with a cracking angular shot from 18 yards until the ball came rebounding back off the Peebles right-hand post and away to safety.
Then the Strollers went nap six minutes from full-time when a Dickson through-ball sent Ross Millar racing clear of the Peebles defence before he notched up his hat-trick with a cool finish from 18 yards.
