Kelso Utd 1 v O Peebles FC

PEEBLES came very close to getting a result against Kelso United in this hectic Central Taxis East of Scotland League First Division match at Woodside Park last Saturday.

In fact, Peebles made a bright start to this game before Kelso began to get the upper hand as they went onto dominate the proceedings after the break with United missing several scoring opportunities.

But Peebles continued to battle away as it seemed that they would almost certainly hold out for a draw until Kelso grabbed a dramatic very late winner from the penalty-spot.

In a competitive first half, Andrew Hamilton, Fraser Henderson and Nicky Cairns all came close to scoring for Peebles with good efforts.

However, Kelso were beginning to get the upper hand as after the Peebles defence had failed to clear a Niall McGurn corner-kick on the left, James McNamara cleared shots from Mark Lockhart and Barry Rayson off the Peebles goal-line in quick succession with the visiting 'keeper well beaten.

Then nearing half-time, following a Craig Edwards free-kick, the trialist Peebles 'keeper foiled Brian Wilson with a brilliant two-handed diving save.

However, it was Kelso who dominated the proceedings after the break as they came close to breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute when Lockhart seemed almost certain to score with a spectacular free-kick attempt from 25 yards until the ball came rebounding back off the Peebles crossbar and away to safety.

Kelso continued on the attack as they twice came close to taking the lead in the space of a minute midway through the second half.

From a Steven Tait right-wing cross, Lockhart headed the ball just inches over the Peebles crossbar from close in.

Then sixty seconds later, from a Brian Tait corner-kick on the left, Lockhart sent the ball narrowly past the far Peebles post with a flashing angular header from six yards.

Peebles replied with an electrifying run from Cairns before he passed the ball to David Knox, who was on target with a spectacular dipping shot from 25 yards until Scott Dowie tipped the ball over his crossbar with a splendid one-handed save.

But then at the other end, from a Burnett free-kick on the right, Stuart Harker was just wide of the mark with a flashing angular header from 12 yards.

Just when it seemed that this game would remain score-less, it was Kelso who grabbed a dramatic late winning goal one minute into injury-time from the penalty-spot.

It all started with the Peebles 'keeper tipping a Derek Burnett header over his crossbar with a fine athletic save.

Then from the resulting McGurn corner-kick on the right, Burnett's net-bound shot from 14 yards was tipped over the Peebles crossbar by Henderson with an outstretched arm.

Then after Fraser Henderson had been sent off for a deliberate hand-ball on the Peebles goal-line, it was Derek Burnett who gave the diving Peebles 'keeper no chance by blasting the ball into the top right-hand corner of the Peebles net with a perfectly placed penalty-kick attempt.
