Peebles 3 v 2 Hawick Royal Albert
PEEBLES got back to winning ways when they just edged out Hawick Royal Albert in an entertaining and competitive Central Taxis East of Scotland League First Division match at Whitestone Park last Saturday.
In fact, both sides had their chances over the piece to win this game, but Peebles deserved to come out on top, especially as they twice struck the Albert woodwork in the second half.
Hawick got off to a dream start as they opened the scoring after just one minute.
After latching onto a Ross Wallace through-ball, Luke Cooper sent over a left-wing cross which picked out the in-rushing Gavin Watson before he coolly drilled the ball past a helpless David Simmons from 8 yards.
But Peebles equalised just two minutes later when a Nicky Cairns corner-kick from the left to the near post found Andrew Hamilton, who gave Hawick 'keeper Steven Walker no chance with a splendid angular header from six yards.
It was Hawick who came close to taking the lead after 40 minutes when from a Ross Wallace left-wing cross, Jody Easdon sent the ball just inches over the Peebles crossbar with a flashing header from six yards.
Then just before half-time, following an Allan Campbell free-kick, Simmons foiled Easdon with a fine save.
Peebles were the first to pose a threat after the break when a Cairns through-ball sent Hamilton racing into the Hawick box before he was thwarted by an excellent save from Walker.
But the home side were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute after Craig Morrison had been sent off after picking up a second yellow card, while Hawick's Liam Wallace also received his marching orders three minutes later after collecting a couple of bookings in quick succession.
It was Peebles who put their noses in front with a second goal after 64 minutes with a cool finish from Fraser Henderson.
A Cairns through-ball sent the striker racing into the Hawick box before he beat an exposed and diving Walker with a crisp angular shot from 16 yards into the far bottom left-hand corner of the Hawick net.
Peebles came close to increasing their lead just two minutes later when from a Henderson through-ball, Hamilton seemed almost certain to score with a cracking shot from 18 yards until the ball came rebounding back off the Hawick right-hand post and away to safety.
But Hawick were back onto level terms in the 71st minute when a Ross Wallace free-kick from midfield picked out Watson inside the Peebles box.
Then after turning on a sixpence, Gavin Watson beat Simmons all ends up with a terrific shot on the volley from 16 yards.
However, Peebles notched what proved to be a winning third goal just two minutes later.
A David Knox free-kick from the right picked out Fraser Henderson at the far post before he gave Walker no chance with a splendid angular header from 8 yards into the far bottom corner of the Albert net.
Peebles would kindly like to thank Whitemoss Garage of West Linton for sponsoring the match ball.
Peebles D. Simmons, D. Urey, C. Dilworth, D. Knox, M. Raffaelli, S. Taylor (S. Jordan 50 mins), C. Morrison, M. Hanratty, F. Henderson, N. Cairns, A. Hamilton.
