Inverleith 59 v 5 Walkerburn

FACING their second consecutive clash with capital opponents, this fortnight past has proved a chalk and cheese experience for Walkerburn RFC.

From a creditable four-try away win to Liberton, they slumped to a nine-tries to one home loss to high flying Inverleith (formerly Holy Cross) on Saturday.

Perhaps distracted by taking the field in warm sunny weather without a trace of the customary fierce wind that whips up white horses on the Tweed, Walkerburn quickly went 7-0 down before the visitors' right winger - despite Dean Gilchrist's attentions - added a second try.

Though J.B. Little put in a great hit on his Arboretum Lads' no 10, two further converted tries put them 26-0 ahead after 23 minutes.

The evergreen Davy Howitt's substitution by Colin Kerr brought greater stability to the home midfield, but that didn't prevent the Inverleith no 12's converted brace increasing their lead to 38-0 as referee Ian Fox of Earlston mercifully blew for half time.

Despite harassment by 'Burns best player of the day Richard Horsley, the Ferry Roadster's no 14 scored to make the score line 45-0 after the resumption.

Back came 'Burn however, with a superb Scott Elder try following great handling by D. Johnston, K. McCudden, and Horsley plus some nifty legerdemain by Henderson, C. McCudden and Golder.

With Captain Currie and Lavender replacing Card and Kerr respectively, no 5 Card had to return to the fray soon after when plucky no 6 Johnston had to retire. Down by 5-45 'Burn conceded two late tries before Little replaced Hope in the dying stages.

Walkerburn president Peter Irvine said: "It was a big disappointment with the damage done in the first half, though we did improve a vast amount in the second.

"As a small club, we're limited in the players we have and against Inverleith the problem was compounded by an injury to Craig Hope, one of our promising young players. We're also missing players with long-term injuries."

Concluded President Irvine: "With Saturday's game at Queensferry, we need a change of attitude from last weekend's - we need to go out with a winning mentality! Yet I thought we showed the right kind of mentality at training the previous week. It surprised me that we couldn't transfer it onto the pitch for the Inverleith game."

Walkerburn: Matt Carter, Craig Hope, Liam Golder and James Fresle, James Zokas, Colin McCudden & Mark Henderson, Dean Gilchrist, Andrew Johnston, Davy Howitt, John B. Little and Liam Card, Keith McCudden, Davy Johnston, Richard Horsley.Replacements (all used): Colin Kerr, Simon Currie, (captain), Scott Elder and Paul Lavender.
