The victorious Hamilton team

PEEBLES bowed out ignominiously from the Melrose Sevens last Saturday to a host side, which threatened much until being denied a late score to beat Hamilton, the eventual winners.

It was not easy for the Borderers, who were taken to extra time by Dundee High School FP in round one, squeezing through 22-17 with a try from Donald Sangster.

Their other scorers were a double and conversion from Neil Warnock and a try from James Oakes. But they failed to trouble the scorers in the second round, losing 45-0 to Melrose.

The tournament was won by Hamilton, the oldest club in their country, who defeated the University of Johannesburg 35-26 in the final.

But this only after Fraser Thomson's 'winning' try against Hamilton in the quarter-final was given by referee Cammy Rudkin before being overruled by the touch judge.

Whether or not Melrose would have gone on to win the Ladies Cup for the first time since 1998 remains conjecture.

But president Mike Dalgetty was delighted that the sevens had been another great success. "We had a tremendous day," he said. "I would like to thank all our sponsors and everyone who made it possible."

Hamilton lifted the Ladies Cup for the first time at the Gibraltar Asset sponsored event in front of a sun-baked 12,000 crowd.

In a thrilling final, Hamilton produced their best form as the lead changed hands several times as they ousted the holders by 35-26.
