Gala Fairydean 4 v 0 Peebles Rovers

PEEBLES Rovers continued their woeful start to the season against Gala Fairydean on Saturday.

The side had failed to pick up a point in either of their opening two games and this trip to Gala proved no different.

Struggling Rovers were missing influential pair Keith Harper and AIan Chalmers but Gala also suffered a blow when Michael Holness picked up an injury during the warm-up and had to be replaced before kick-off by Jedburgh youngster Liam Wallace.

Peebles almost grabbed a shock lead on two minutes but player/coach Kevin Martin saw his 30 yard free kick well saved by Liam Hanson.

Boyes nearly made a dream debut for Gala but he saw his effort cleared off the line by Jason Girwood on 16 minutes.

But just four minutes later Gala had the lead. It was Wallace who was allowed to pick out Chris Anderson, who calmly knock the ball past Bruce Callan in the Peebles goal.

And any hopes of Peebles getting back into the match ended after half an hour when Girwood, who had already been booked for swearing at referee Peter Stuart, received a second yellow after getting involved in an altercation with Anderson.

Just before half time, 16-year-old Allan Smith, who was played up front to accomodate Boyes and Faichney, killed the game completely with a 20 yard free kick which found the net.

A scrappy second-half produced few clear-cut chances but Wallace forced home an Anderson corner on 55 minutes to make it 3-0.

And just five minutes later it was 4-0 with the goal of the game. Gareth Wood’s free kick from just inside his own half fell perfectly into the path of Smith beyond the Peebles defence, and the teenager controlled the ball well before calmly slotting the ball into the net for his third goal in two games.

Smith could have had his hat-trick late on were it not for Callan making a great close range save, while substitute Niall McGurn was also denied by a goal by a good Callan stop.
