Vale of Leithen 6 v 0 Hawick Royal Albert

THIS was a tale of two goalkeepers called Walker, who might as well have been at opposite ends of the earth as a football pitch, such was the contrast in their experience of Saturday afternoon.

You could say Vale’s Darren had a rather quiet afternoon, while Hawick’s Steven found himself under bombardment for the entire ninety minutes.

There was no repeat of the double-digit victory Vale had inflicted on Hawick in the Image Printers Cup a fortnight ago, but this wasn’t just down to the heroics of Walker in the Hawick goalmouth.

Vale, having taken a two-goal lead inside ten minutes and with one eye on this weekend’s Scottish Cup clash, slipped pretty much into cruise control for the remaining 80 minutes.

Vale took the lead as a fourth minute cross from Scott Moffat found Graeme Cole at the back post to guide the ball home.

Some careless pushing in the penalty area five minutes later saw Vale awarded a penalty and Lauder stepped up to give Walker no chance from the spot. There was certainly no question of a lack of desire by Allbert.

Gavin Watson directed a header on target to force Darren Walker into what was the closest he came to making a save all afternoon, while a furious argument erupted between Albert players Kenny Hope and Jori Robertson over the conceding of a corner which resulted in both being spoken to by the referee.

The home side stretched further ahead in the 38th minute as Kerr Dodds knocked home a Darren Gillon cross and Vale went in at the break 4-0 up thanks to another penalty awarded after Cole was brought down in the area by Ross Wallace, again tucked away by Lauder.

The traffic continued towards the Royalists’ goal in the second half, with a fortunate break of the ball putting Moffat in on goal, but Walker stuck out a leg to divert the shot.

Walker pulled off a great save as John Hall met a Dodds cross to powerfully head at goal, but another Vale strike was only moments away as Cole ran on to a long pass by Mike Osbourne to hammer a shot home.

Vale’s sixth came in the 77th minute. A Cole cross found Dodds in the middle, whose header was blocked brilliantly by Walker, but the rebound fell back to Dodds who squared the ball for Moffat to blast home.

Vale of Leithen: D. Walker; A. Milligan (M. Osbourne 46), J. Lauder, J. Hall (A. Chbira 58), P. Lee, P. Greenhill, D. Gillon (C. Beaton 44), K. Dodds, S. Moffat, A. Martin, G. Cole.
