Vale of Leithen 1 v 3 Keith

VALE observed a minute’s silence before this game for former Vale hero Ronnie Tolmie, but were looking for eleven heroes on the pitch in this Scottish Cup tie.

They got them as Vale put in a suberb display during the first half, before Keith stepped up a gear in the second and Cammy Keith bagged a hat trick to ensure the Highland League side’s place in the next round.

In the eleventh minute, Vale took the lead as a Jamie Lauder corner was headed towards goal by Scott Moffat and John Hall bundled the ball into the net from close range.

It was Hall’s first goal for the club and unlikely to win any goal of the season awards, but Vale were in front and the luck seemed to be with them.

Keith passed up an excellent chance to equalise eight minutes later as Vale’s Graeme Cole was penalised for holding Stuart Walker in the area.

Dean Donaldson stepped up to take the penalty, but Vale keeper Darren Walker got down superbly to block the kick and then denyDonaldson’s follow-up effort from the rebound.

Vale were the side with the momentum and Osbourne was desperately unlucky to see a rocket from 25 yards dip inches over the crossbar.

A great first half from Vale, but you suspected that they would be unable to sustain that level of intensity in the second 45.

Within eight minutes of the restart Keith got the break they needed, when they were awarded a second penalty after Hall clipped Donaldson in the box. The first penalty award may have been contentious, but there was no doubt about this one and this time Cammy Keith made no mistake from the spot.

Six minutes later the Highland League side were ahead, with hit-man Keith striking again as he stayed onside to run on to a flick from Donaldson and drill home from a tight angle.

Keith completed his hat trick and confirmed his side’s place in the next round in the 69th minute when he headed home after his initial effort from a Jonathan Smith corner had been blocked on the line by Stewart. The ball looped into the air and Keith was quickest to react to make sure the ball ended up in the net.
