Whitehill Welfare 4 v 0 Vale of Leithen
HISTORY certainly wasn’t on Vale’s side going into this Premier Division fixture, with their previous ten visits to Ferguson Park resulting in nine losses.
It wasn’t a bad performance - the first half in particular saw some very positive play from the Innerleithen side - but they were again undone by a lack of cutting edge upfront. Just two goals scored in five league fixtures so far tells it’s own story.
Vale almost got off to a dream start as Youseff Bejaoui spilled the ball in the first minute with Scott Moffat in attendance, but the Welfare keeper recovered before Moffat could pull the trigger.
Instead, it was Whitehill who had the dream start, a nice passing move in the fifth minute ending with Ross Allum executing a neat back heel in the path of Jordan Hall, who strode into the penalty area to find the net via a post.
Three minutes later there was a controversial moment when Moffat was whistled offside as he ran on to a Steve Radzynski pass to put the ball in the net. It was a marginal decision, with even the home side acknowledging that they’d been let off the hook by the assistant referee.
Radzynski got a head to a Chris Beaton cross but couldn’t find the target, while Moffat came closer as a head flick from a Jamie Lauder corner bounced off the crossbar.
Whitehill grabbed a second in the final minute of the first half. Allum swung a cross into the goalmouth which Walker stretched to palm away. Unfortunately it fell to an unmarked Hall, 10 yards from goal, who wasted no time in dispatching the ball into the net.
Nobody could have reasonably said that there was two goals between the sides at half time, but although Vale moved the ball about well in the second period and never gave up the fight, Bejaoui was rarely troubled in the Whitehill goal.
Twelve minutes into the second half Scott Gormley pounced on the rebound after his first effort from a Hall cross had been blocked by Walker to put Whitehill three up.
Willie Lunn completed the scoring in the 71st minute, finding himself in plenty of space in the Vale penalty area to fire home.
