Vale take a share of the spoils

Another week, another draw, but while last week’s result against Edinburgh City was the right outcome on the balance of play, Vale certainly did enough to win this game.
The students arrived in Innerleithen protecting a 100% league record and on the odd moments when they got their passing game together it was easy to see how.
But this turned out to be a tight game played at a fast tempo with precious little space for creative players to flourish as both teams closed their opponents down quickly.
Vale came racing out the traps and put the visitors under some early pressure. An Andy Milligan shot whizzed narrowly over the bar, while Scott Moffat headed just wide.
Andy Martin nearly caught out Uni keeper Mark Tait with a neat flick from a Cole cross, but a deflection took the sting out of the effort and Tait was able to collect.
It was still goal less at half time, but eight minutes after the turnaround, 'Burgh took the lead. A slick passing move saw James Craigen push the ball towards Peder Beck-Friis on the edge of the area.
The big striker held the ball up well, before sending a great pass through the defence for Colin Cameron to run onto, and Cameron made no mistake with a low shot into the net.
The lead lasted only five minutes however, Vale right back Milligan catching Tait off his line with a looping shot that swerved over the goalkeeper’s head and into the net.
Vale’s Jamie Lauder saw an effort from distance fly wide of the upright, while at the other end a fortunate break of the ball put Hamish Munro clear in on goal, but Vale keeper Darren Walker came out to snuff out the danger.
Vale thought they had found a winner ten minutes from time when Kerr Dodds hammered a shot into the net from a lay-off by substitute Steve Radzynski, but celebrations were cut short when it became apparent that the assistant referee had flagged Radzynski offside due to his position during the first phase of the attack.
Vale laid seige to the visitors goal for the remainder of the game and ended the match forcing five corners in succession while Uni defended stoutly.
But there was no way through and the points were shared.
