Biggar 25 v 20 Kirkcaldy
KIRKCALDY made their second trip to Hartreemill in two months for this Premier 'C' clash and the result was the same with the home side once again tasting victory.
Biggar opened the scoring after just six minutes with an excellent score which came about following a sustained period of forward pressure on the right flank.
The ball won was then transferred left and with some deft touches in midfield featuring Conor Lavery, Jade Gardner and Thomson, the final pass was gathered by Michael McKeand who nipped over the line.
Unfortunately, a communication error with the kicking tee led to Craig Parker rushing his conversion kick and the ball spun wide.
Kirkcaldy were seldom out of the game using their forwards, and the pick and drive option ensured they enjoyed good possession, but they were only able to make marginal headway in terms of territory as the Biggar defence held firm.
The second Biggar score came after 15 minutes with a dominant Biggar scrum the catalyst. Renwick picked to break blind and having dummied a pass he elected to grubber kick up the touchline with winger Parker on the chase.
He outstripped the initial cover defence but it was always going to be too difficult to pick up and make the line for a try so utilising all his football skills Parker neatly kicked the ball inside to Renwick who dived over for the try.
The match continued in similar fashion with the Kirkcaldy pack as effective in the loose as they were ineffective in the tight scrum, Biggar attacking with pace and winning some crucial turnovers as they pressurised their visitors. Parker added a penalty to give Biggar a 13-0 interval lead.
The second half began badly for both sides. Kirkcaldy lost the services of their big prop in the same movement as they earned a penalty try, their change of tactic to kick and chase seeing them through to the line.
Stung into action Biggar replied immediately through a third score, this credited to flank forward Scott Cameron.
Colin Arthur who is enjoying a real run of form recently made a great surge forward with Suti Faamausili continuing the movement. With just feet to go to the line, Cameron powered over for the try which Parker again just failed to convert.
Three minutes later and it was the all-important fourth and bonus point-winning try, this a veritable peach and created by Chris McKeand.
The fullback collected a loose clearance on half way and set off on a diagonal sprint to the right hand corner, he then made a great pass to Lavery who had, somehow, managed to pick a supporting line. Parker on this occasion kicked the extra points.
Kirkcaldy captain Colin Harvey did his best to urge his team as they looked in danger of imploding, and to their credit they responded with the final half hour belonging to the Fife side.
The first signs of a comeback came from a poor Biggar lineout as as a try was snaffled, and Quintan Sanft was on target with the conversion. The same man then added a penalty as Kirkcaldy began to creep ever closer.
Order was almost restored following another great break out from Gardner. The big centre who had at least three players in support and only the full-back to beat elected to kick ahead, but a despairing hack over the line averted the immediate danger.
Sanft then added yet another penalty to bring his side within bonus point territory.
Happily the referee brought things to a close before Kirkcaldy could add to their tally, the over-riding impression being that had the game gone on for another five minutes Kirkcaldy may have well sneaked a win.
This feeling was endorsed by a despondent Sanft who has endured several such situations this season, Kirkcaldy being hugely generous to their opponents as they have failed to 'start' before engineering a trademark comeback.
