Vale bounce back against rivals Selkirk

IT was round two of the Premier Division's only Borders derby at a rainy Yarrow Park last Saturday.
Games between these two sides tend to be attractive affairs with plenty of good football on offer, but with both teams battling the elements as much as each other, it did degenerate into what you might call a typical derby.
The first half saw the sides trading blows equally, with the pace rarely dropping below 100mph. Vale's Andy Martin tried to catch out Selkirk keeper John Dodds with a snap shot from a tight angle early on.
Jason Inglis saw an effort come crashing off the bar for the home side, before a Jay Wilson free kick found Euan Pritchard in plenty of space, but the big centre-half skied the chance over the bar.
But Selkirk weren't to be denied for much longer and took the lead in the 19th minute when Shaun Hardie knocked a ball on for Paul Hossack to blast into the roof of the net from 10 yards out.
It was end to end stuff as an effort from Vale's Kerr Dodds was cleared off the line by Barry Milven, while Vale keeper Darren Walker pulled off a superb save, diving to turn away a Hardie header destined for the bottom corner.
Vale did equalise in the 37th minute when a long clearance from Walker was knocked on by Anderson, and Scott Moffat ghosted in to volley home at the back post. Within a couple of minutes the Souters were back in the lead as Hossack found space in the penalty area to turn the ball into the net.
Nine minutes into the second half, Vale were presented with a chance to pull themselves level again as Lee Stephen was penalised for upending Anderson in the box.
It wasn't the most clear-cut of penalties, but that didn't bother Jamie Lauder as he stepped forward to give Dodds no chance from the spot.
Much of the second half saw Selkirk on the ropes as Vale pushed forward.
But the Innerleithen side couldn't find a knock out blow. Efforts from Moffat, Dodds and Graeme Cole might have brought some much-needed cheers at nearby Philiphaugh keeper Dodds was rarely called into significant action.
Selkirk had a late chance to steal a win with a rare second half attack, but Walker stretched to stop an Inglis header and the points were shared.
