Vale of Leithen 2 v 1 Peebles Rovers

PRE-MATCH predictions hadn't given Rovers much of a prayer going into this match and although it was Vale who booked their place in the Third Round of the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, the Innerleithen side certainly had to work for it.

Following a pre-match downpour, the game kicked off at a frantic pace in conditions which would only get heavier as the game wore on.

Following a fairly even opening spell, Vale started to take command of midfield, with chances from Steven Radzynski, Scott Mofffat and Paul Devlin going close.

The match was in its 35th minute before Peebles managed their first serious effort on goal as a shot from captain Nicky Cairns had Chris Hill scrambling across his line. Hill then gathered another Cairns shot, before an ambitious long range effort from the same player trundled harmlessly wide.

With the rain continuing to fall, the conditions were causing referee Scott Jamieson enough concern to warrant a close check on the pitch during half time, but the official elected to let the second half start.

Within six minutes of the restart Radzynski had the ball in the net, but the flag had raised for offside against the Vale striker. Then, a good move involving Beaton and Devlin ended with Jordan Hall glancing a header narrowly wide from an Andy Martin cross.

But it was Peebles who took the lead on the hour mark against the run of play.

Andrew Williamson rose to meet a Michael Holness corner and his header took enough of a deflection off Vale defender Paul Lee to wrong-foot Hill.

It was a lead that lasted only five minutes though, as Moffat side-footed a Martin cross into the net.

Another good move from Vale saw Hall, McKenzie and Devlin combine to set up Radzynski, but once again the whistle sounded for offside as he tucked the ball into the net.

Vale threw on David Anderson and John Ferguson in search of a winning goal and it arrived four minutes from time as Radzynski turned his marker beautifully to square for Ferguson to fire past Nisbet.

Ferguson saw another effort come back off the post a couple of minutes later, but Peebles passed up a couple of golden chances to take the game into extra time in the dying minutes.

Firstly Gary Knox curled a ball wide from a good position before Steven Galloway sent Craig Edgar through on goal, only for Hill to come racing off his line to bravely block.

The ball rebounded straight to Holness, but the midfielder slipped at the crucial moment and his shot ended up well off target.
