A month previously, the students were unlucky to leave Victoria Park with nothing to show for their efforts, but at their smart, recently refurbished home ground at Peffermill, this time they made no mistake.

Vale’s run of good form that took in that victory seems like much longer ago now and once again they were undone by three goals that had a familiar look about them, which were in order of appearance; conceding from a set-piece, a fatal lapse of defensive concentration and giving away possession in a vital area.

It wasn’t all bad for Vale though and a first half packed with chances at either end saw Vale come closest while the game was still scoreless, when a Josh Morris effort rebounded back off the post.

But Uni took control with strikes either side of half time.

A minute before the break, Duncan Black rose to power a header in from a corner and the second half was only 48 seconds old when Jack Guthrie doubled the advantage as the lively Finn Daniels-Yeoman reacted quickest to a loose ball on the edge of the area to tee up the striker.

Vale went straight up the other end and pulled a goal back, some good play from Chris Anderson finding Jason Stevens arriving at the back post to knock home.

Despite this, in truth Vale rarely looked like getting back on level terms, although it took a superb save from 'Burgh goalkeeper Mark Tait to preserve his side’s lead as he spectacularly tipped a close-range Jack Blaikie header over.

At the other end, Vale keeper Mark Wilson, making his 100th appearance for the club, denied Guthrie a brace with an outstanding block.

But with two minutes remaining, Uni sealed it when substitute Dan Ward was gifted possession and found Ross Patterson in acres of space and with all the time he needed to pick his spot.
