ALL he has ever wanted to be is a jockey.

And Ross Wilson moved a step nearer joining the professional ranks when he registered his first win.

The 21-year-old from Peebles was victorious on Pharawaydante, owned by his uncle, Norman Sanderson, in a maiden race at the Cumbrian Farmers point-to-point meeting at Dalston, near Carlisle.

Parents Audrey and David are hopeful the success will boost Ross in his bid to make a career as a National Hunt rider.

"Ever since he was four or five, he's wanted to be a jockey," said Mrs Wilson. "He's been riding as an amateur for four years and has been placed a few times in National Hunt races.

"He did pony racing when he was younger and he won the Beltane Bell three times in a row."

Ross has left home ti further his ambition and is now working for trainer Nicky Richards at Greystoke in Cumbria.

He has been given plenty of tips from Brian Harding, the senior jockey in the yard and one of the leading riders on the northern circuit.

"Brian has done a lot of training with Ross and he has come on in leaps and bounds since he went there six months ago," said Mrs Wilson.

Ross's weight is around 9st 7lbs, making him too heavy to be a Flat race rider. But his mother said: "Ross prefers jump racing anyway - he thinks the Flat is boring."
