Peebles 1 v 6 Gretna
PEEBLES tried their best as they continued to battle away throughout the 90 minutes but Gretna proved to be convincing winners in the end with two very late goals.
Peebles looked like a more organised side than in previous weeks but they were up against a Gretna side who played some excellent football.
The visitors were looking dangerous on the break in the early stages before it was Peebles who opened the scoring after 23 minutes when an attempted Ryan Errington pass-back to his 'keeper was intercepted by Nicky Cairns before he coolly drilled the ball past an exposed Alex Mitchell from 12 yards.
Gretna equalised just 60 seconds later when from a Curtis Wood left-wing cross, Adam McMath gave David Simmons no chance with a crisp shot on the turn from 14 yards.
Then after Simmons had foiled McMath and Ross Johnston with fine saves, Gretna took the lead with a second goal on the half-hour mark.
A Dan Carmichael left-wing cross to the far post picked out Johnston before he slipped the ball back across to Adam McMath, who slammed it into the roof of the Peebles net from close range.
Moments later, McMath came close to increasing Gretna's lead with a good effort before McMath notched up his hat-trick in the 38th minute.
Following a Dean Rea free-kick, Adam McMath beat Simmons all ends up with a spectacular angular shot from 20 yards into the far top right-hand corner of the Peebles net.
Gretna added a fourth goal three minutes after half-time when after the Peebles defence had failed to clear a Carmichael corner-kick from the left, there was a scramble in the Peebles goal-mouth before Tony Nicholson lashed the loose ball home from six yards.
Three minutes before full-time, Peebles 'keeper Simmons sustained an injury and had to be carried off the field.
Just when it seemed that there would be no further scoring, Gretna went nap one minute into injury-time when a Cummersky defence-splitting pass sent Dan Carmichael racing into the Peebles box before he coolly drilled the ball past stand-in Peebles 'keeper Marco Raffaelli with a low angular shot from 14 yards.
Gretna made it six in the sixth minute of injury-time. After a neat Gretna build-up down the right, Dan Carmichael skilfully beat a couple of defenders on the edge of the Peebles box before he gave Raffaelli no chance with a terrific dipping shot from 20 yards into the top left-hand corner of the Peebles net.
