PEEBLES youngster Craig Howie underlined his growing credentials by finishing joint first in the Scottish Golf Academy's winter series event at the home of golf.
The 15-year-old, who was recently selected into the Scotland boys' development squad, fired an excellent level par round of 70 on the Eden course at St Andrews to tie at the top of the leader board with the home town's Ewan Scott - the reigning English Boys U14s champion.
Howie got his round off to a flyer with a birdie at the first and bounced back from a bogey at the second hole with a spectacular eagle two at the fourth hole.
A double bogey followed at the next but a birdie at the sixth put the Peebles youngster one-under par at the turn.
Howie moved to two-under with a birdie at the 14th and despite dropped shots at the 16th and 17th, he topped the field alongside Scott to record his maiden Winter Series win.
Following a third place finish at Whitekirk in the previous event, Howie now moves into the final event next month at Forrester Park in fourth spot in the national U16s rankings.
Peebles team-mate Daniel Flannery shot a five-over par 70 to finish in a tie for 10th spot at St Andrews and joins Howie in the top 10 in eighth spot with one event to go.
Ailsa Bain, another member of Peebles' flourishing junior golf section, had a disappointing finish to her round, eventually settling for 5th place in the girls section, but she goes into the final event at third place in the rankings with an opportunity to win the Girls Winter Series Order of Merit.
Both Howie and Flannery are likely to feature in the Borders boys team which will contest the Scottish Boys Area Team Championship on Sunday June 6, which this year takes place at Peebles.
